Spain Sued For Looted Art

A San Diego man on Tuesday sued the Spanish government for the return of a famous Impressionist painting he claims was looted from his grandmother by Nazis. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, seeks the return of "Rue Saint-Honore, apres-midi, effect de pluie," by Camille Pissarro, as well as damages. It claims the painting of a rainy afternoon on a Paris street was looted from its Jewish owner in 1939 and is now housed at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. The lawsuit follows a 2004 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that a California woman could sue the government of Austria under the 1976 Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act for the return of six Gustav Klimt paintings that were seized from her uncle by Nazis.
