Aussie Van Gogh Art Fake?

The National Galley of Victoria in Australia rejected claims that a $25 million Vincent Van Gogh painting it has lent to an exhibition in Scotland is a fake. The Sunday Times newspaper quoted experts who doubt its authenticity. Critics say it is the only horizontal portrait attributed to the Dutch master and has greater clarity than other Van Gogh works from the same period. The painting is not mentioned in any of the artist's letters. It was painted on canvas and mounted on a panel - unusual for Van Gogh. The Sunday Times art critic said: "It is clear to me it isn't a Van Gogh. It lacks the slightly crazy intensity, that obsessive engagement with a subject that you can see in other works." ArtWatch UK, said the painting had all the hallmarks of a forgery. The subject's beard touched the bottom of the canvas, indicating that the original painting was deeper and that the bottom may have been cut off, possibly to remove a signature. The National Gallery of Victoria director said. "We do stand by our belief in the fact that this is a Van Gogh." For the full story - click the title Irish Art
