New Art Form Discovered

A Bristol artist who had to have her wisdom teeth extracted has carved them into miniature tooth fairy sculptures. Cordelia Cembrowicz, who studied art in Cornwall, wanted to keep her teeth as "a challenge to the social conventions of today's throwaway society". "It was painful having them out so this is a nice way of getting over that experience," the 23-year-old said. It takes Cordelia, from Clifton, about 70 hours to carve each tooth using a dentist's drill bit and microscope. Before carving her own teeth she asked her dentist for a tooth to practise on. "It's very difficult and takes a lot of concentration. There's the enamel shell then the soft layer and hollow centre," she said. "The first one went very well so I was confident of doing my own." Ms Cembrowicz has also carved teeth from her father, sister and an anonymous donor. "I like to talk to the person whose tooth I'm going to carve because it helps me decide the sort of fairy the tooth should become," said Cordelia. Cordelia is hoping to carve other people's teeth into fairies. "I'd like to do more of this - it's a magical transformation," she said. For the full story - click the title Irish Art
