The Instant Art Machine

An artist is in a spin over his motorised painting machine, which is up for a national prize. Lee McDonald has entered the device, which works by pouring paint on to rotating canvasses, for the Celeste Art Prize 2007. The 27-year-old from Peverell is up against hundreds of other artists for the public online vote. The artist who gets the most votes will be awarded £2,000 at a ceremony in London on Sunday, May 27. Lee, who is a member of Flameworks, an artist-led creative arts group based in Devonport, said: "I've been creating art since I can remember. At the moment I'm doing kinetic art. I'm interested in random movements and how materials interact with each other. With this kinetic painting machine I can control the direction the canvasses spin with motors. Changing small things creates different patterns." Lee has a diploma in art and design from Plymouth College of Art and Design and is a bachelor of fine arts from the University of the West of England in Bristol.
