Rothko Art Record
A painting by the US abstract artist Mark Rothko has become the most expensive contemporary work to sell at auction, fetching $US72.8 million at Sotheby's in New York. The canvas by the Latvian-born painter entitled White Center (Yellow, Pink, Lavender on Rose), had been valued at around $US40 million. It went to a buyer who asked to remain anonymous, according to the auction house. It had been part of the collection of the New York philanthropist David Rockefeller since 1960. Also at the sale, a painting by the Irish-born artist Francis Bacon fetched $US52.68 million, eclipsing the expected $US30 million price tag. The most expensive contemporary painting ever sold was Jackson Pollock's No. 5, 1948, which took $US140 million in a private sale to an anonymous buyer in 2006.
