Most Reproduced Art

The most reproduced work of art in history goes on public display in London today. Neither the Mona Lisa, nor Michaelangelo's David, is in the same league: sculptor Arnold Machin's portrait of the Queen has sold well over 200 billion copies in the last 40 years, since it was issued in July 1967 as the new definitive British postage stamp. His original sculptures, drawings and photographs are on display at the Royal College of Art with some of the also rans from the 1966 competition for the new stamp. They include a severe wood engraving by David Gentleman, the artist who had been campaigning with the new Postmaster General, one Anthony Wedgwood Benn, to have the Queen's head dropped completely from the stamps. She was not amused, and a number of trial designs for special issue stamps without her head, were never issued. (For full source and article click the Headline). Irish Art
