Get A Damien Hirst For £1

He is one of the world's most famous artists and his latest work – a diamond encrusted skull – went for a sparkling £50m. And now visitors to Leeds Art Gallery are being given the opportunity to snap up an original Damien Hirst sketch for just £1. Hirst, who was brought up in Leeds and attended the city's College of Art and Design, has drawn a shark on the back of a catalogue featuring his work. The signed and dated picture will tomorrow go on display at the recently-refurbished art gallery and visitors will be able to buy a raffle ticket to have a chance of winning the special prize, estimated to be worth thousands of pounds. The draw will be made on December 20 and all the money raised will go to Heart Research UK, the nominated charity of the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun Brian Cleasby. The man behind the scheme is Dr Jeffrey Sherwin, an honorary alderman and former Leisure Services Committee chairman, who assists with the Lord Mayor's charity functions He said: "As Damien is essentially a Leeds lad, I asked him if he would help and he came up trumps with a catalogue covered with a great sketch, signed and dated".
